The European Commission has decided to open talks on removing the visa regime for Serbian citizens traveling to the EU. European Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security Franco Fratinni made the announcement today in Brussels. EC to open talks for visa-free regime Commissioner Fratinni has given instructions for the opening of a dialogue with Serbia for a visa-free regime for Serbian citizens traveling to the EU, Fratinni’s spokesman Frisco Roscam Abbing said. The first meeting at a technical level will be held in Belgrade on January 30, he said. Abbing explained that the talks would allow both sides “to establish key areas for action, such as illegal immigration, public order and security.” One possible outcome to the talks will be a list of conditions that the Serbian authorities have to meet in order to for the visa regime to be abolished, said Frattini’s spokesman. Frattini said that “the dialogue is a tangible proof of dedication to implementing commitments undertaken by the EU,” adding that it confirmed Serbia’s European future. The commissioner said that technical preparations between EC experts and the Belgrade government had made progress, and that a decision had been taken for “structural dialogue” with Belgrade that should allow better monitoring of a future agreement and measures for visa-free travel for Serbian citizens. Abbing added that Frattini and the EC were delighted to hear that Serbia was introducing biometric passports from March this year. He reiterated that an EU agreement for visa relaxations had already come into force on January 1. Frattini’s spokesman said that this was very important, “indeed a historic moment” for strengthening EU-Serbian relations and the direct dialogue between its citizens.
