Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic visited Slovenia yesterday at the invitation of counterpart Dimitrij Rupel. Following a meeting, Rupel said that discussions had focussed less on bilateral relations between Serbia and Slovenia, who currently hold the EU chair, than on European themes, such as signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) and the Kosovo crisis. Jeremic, Rupel discuss SAA, Kosovo The Slovenian foreign minister now intends to consult his European colleagues and try to bring them round to Slovenia’s point of view that Serbia should sign the SAA at the end of the month. He added that Germany, with whose minister he spoke yesterday, was in agreement, and that he would travel to Holland on Wednesday where he would meet with new Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz. Rupel added that he would also be meeting with his Dutch colleague whom he would attempt to persuade not to stand in the way of signing the agreement. “The EU needs Serbia and the whole western Balkans, its energy and strength,” said Rupel, adding that Slovenia would try to remove visa restrictions for the whole region as soon as possible. During their conversation, Jeremic repeated the Serbian government’s position on the Kosovo crisis, and, in response to journalists’ questions, said that Serbia was happy with the work of the “European Troika” unlike with the Martti Ahtisaari-led talks, though full success would only be registered if and when a compromise deal was reached. The foreign minister added that the government felt there was still room for further negotiations, and that reaching a compromise solution was the only way of preserving peace and stability. He said that Serbia welcomed the EU’s desire to address the Kosovo problem “deeper”, but that he could only talk of an EU mission to the province if the measure had a legal framework that could be given solely via a new resolution in the UN Security Council. Jeremic also welcomed the idea of creating a working group to assist Serbian EU integration, particularly in the area of Hague cooperation. Rupel added that it had still not been formed, though he hoped that there would be plenty of interest in joining it, repeating that the group should include representatives from Slovenia, France, the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
