U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Muniter was in Zrenjanin, Vojvodina, this Thursday. "These are difficult days for relations between Serbia and the United States," the diplomat said. After opening a rural development education center, Munter reiterated that, from the U.S. viewpoint, the future status of Kosovo should be supervised independence, as outlined in the Ahtisaari plan, which failed to pass at the UN several times this spring, on each occasion blocked by Russia. According to Munter, this would be the best solution, to prevent instability in the region, "although many disagree with this, including the Serbian government". "We are openly discussing these problems, in an attempt to overcome them, and I believe that we will succeed in this, and that we will come to issues that are of the greatest interest for the citizens of Serbia," the U.S. ambassador explained. He added that, apart from Kosovo, there are other important matters that require focusing on, such as unemployment, economic development and cultural exchange. But the municipal press service in Zrenjanin issued a statement saying that the local administration heads "informed Munter about estimates of a real threat to future cooperation, because of U.S. insistence on solutions contrary to international law and Serbia's national interests, which could result in the cooling of relations between the two countries".
