BRUSSELS --
NATO foreign ministers asked for the Kosovo status process to proceed “in an orderly fashion and under supervision.”

Speaking in Brussels at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, they surmised that stagnation was creating the threat of even greater instability.
NATO ministers also adopted a united position that KFOR troops should remain in Kosovo on the basis of Security Council Resolution 1244, regardless of the final outcome, said NATO spokesman James Appathurai.
Reviewing the conclusions of the ministers’ debate, he stressed that all NATO members were determined to retain KFOR troop numbers at their current levels, and to send reinforcements if necessary.
Appathurai underlined that “the ministers of the Atlantic alliance did not discuss what position NATO member-states might take in the event of a unilateral declaration of independence by the Kosovo Albanians, as that is a matter for the UN and individual countries.”
Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht said last night, after a meeting of NATO and EU foreign ministers, that “much still had to be discussed” as far as reactions to a unilateral declaration were concerned.
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, in his introductory speech at the session, stressed that it was “crucially important to preserve security and stability” in the Balkans, reiterating that NATO would come down hard on any attempt to resort to force.
