An unnamed Russian official said that Kosovo independence would set a precedent in Georgia and elsewhere. The official said that Moscow could recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia if the West recognizes Kosovo’s independence from Serbia. “If Kosovo can be independent, so can Abkhazia” “From my diplomatic answer, it is clear in which direction the situation could potentially develop. The recognition of Kosovo will set a precedent for us,” the source said, requesting to remain anonymous and not go into extensive detail on the issue. Russia officials continue to back Serbia’s stance against the independence of Kosovo, and have been doing so diplomatically for months, stating that such a move would set a precedent for separatists in other parts of the world, including the former Soviet republics. However, the Reuters new agency reports that Moscow has yet to explicitly state that it would react to the recognition of Kosovo independence by recognizing South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
