Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac will attend a Council of Southeast European Defense Ministers session in Kiev. Since last year, Serbia has had the status of an observer in the Council, which includes NATO and Partnership for Peace member countries. Meeting of regional defense ministers U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will also attend the meeting and is expected to ask the countries of Southeast Europe for help in the war in Afghanistan. Gates is mulling the possibility of taking all U.S. troops out of Kosovo and transferring them to Afghanistan if NATO member countries do not take over a higher level of responsibility there. Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morell said that Gates will ask members of the NATO Alliance to send added troops and equipment to Afghanistan, and will discuss the idea of taking 1,600 U.S. troops out of Kosovo. Reuters, quoting reliable sources, stated that Gates is trying to send a signal to Europe that it will be left to deal with the unstable situation in “its own backyard” all by itself Europe does not help the U.S. in Afghanistan.
