The parliament finished its discussion yesterday on the proposal for "ending Cuban sanctions and isolation." The declaration was proposed by the Serb Radical Party (SRS). Cuba on Serbian parliamentary agenda All other parliamentary parties have announced support for the declaration, except the Liberal Democrats (LDP), who have stated that the parliament has "a lot more pressing issues to discuss." Yesterday’s session was attended by Cuban ambassador to Serbia Julio Cesar Cancio Ferrer and Hadzi Dragan Antic, former Politika editor-in-chief who has close relations with the Milosevic regime, who said that he was “present as a representative of Cuban interests.” “I came with the Cuban ambassador to bear witness to a historical event in the Serbian Parliament. I think that it is very important that this declaration be adopted,” he said. Asked by B92 whether he is in contact with Milosevic’s widow Mirjana Markovic, his close friend, who now features in an international arrest warrant, he said, “That is an idiotic question, as far as I’m concerned. The conversation is over. We can talk about Cuba, but we cannot talk about that.” Explaining the proposed declaration, SRS official Aleksandar Vucic said that Serbia "has the obligation to show solidarity with people who have not done anything and have not attacked anyone." “Cuba has always had friendly relations with the Serbian people and Serbia, as well as with the former Yugoslavia. It never accepted sanctions against us, and always refrained from aggression and any form of occupation of our territory and it is one of the countries we can say that we have always had the best possible relations with,” Vucic said. LDP official Natasa Micic, on the other hand, said that the discussion of this declaration shows that the parliament is not dealing with essential matters, and is instead dedicated to irrelevant issues. She said that the parliament has yet to discuss a long list of very important laws. “This discussion and some others, such as the discuss of the Government Law are practically devastating the parliament. This is not in the least fit for a parliamentary level." "I respect the presence of the ambassador, but it is not the parliament’s job to charm any embassy. This is not within the parliament’s scope of work, and according to the Constitution which was adopted by you gentlemen,” Micic, a former speaker, addressed the parliamentary majority.
