Serbian Army soldiers and U.S. National Guards held the first joint drill in Nis on Thursday. Serbian Army (VS) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponos said afterwards that the Serbian military is acting "in keeping with the proclaimed state and foreign policy and not with the statements of party officials." "The state policy at this time to actively participate in NATO's Partnership for Peace program," Ponos said, and added the Army followed the guidelines set by the parliament. Ponos also said the Army is monitoring the situation in the field, as well as statements by international officials, regarding the southern province of Kosovo, which he said also implies "preparation for different scenarios." The political decision by authorized Serbian insitutions will determine which scenario will be implemented, he explained. Ponos and Ohio National Guard Commander Maj. Gen.Gregory Wayt told a news conference in Nis that today's joint exercise by the VS and Guard members represented a continuation of a year-long successful cooperation. The generals told reporters they agreed that there was "much space for cooperation to continue in the coming period as well." Participants in the exercise were 34 members of the VS 63rd Parachute Battalion and 17 members of the Ohio National Guard. Three helicopters and a transport airplane were also engaged in this exercise. The drill, held at Nis Airfield, implemented a joint training program, and was also attended by President Boris Tadic, United States Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter, and Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac.
