Five young women have this year enrolled at the Serbian Army (VS) pilot training program. 17 young men and women in all, candidates for the 132nd class of army pilots at the Military Academy, enrolled in a one-month selective training at Batajnica airport, with the Air Force's 252nd Mixed Aviation Squadron. First women pilots in Serbian Air Force 19-year-old Sandra Radovanovic says she is on the way to fulfill her dream and became an army pilot. After completing survival tests and parachute training, she has already mastered skills required to fly a small aircraft. “I am very proud to be among the first women in this predominantly male profession. It is an amazing feeling. I have never experienced something like this,” Radovanovic said. With the assistance of their instructors, the trainees are learning how to take off and land in military jets. Captain Stevan Vukovic, one of the instructors in the program, says that the girls are doing very well. “It is an interesting experience for us as well, since it is the first time we have had girls training to become pilots. I have to say we are pleasantly surprised at their skills. They are completely on a par with their male colleagues,” he said. The vocation of a pilot is very demanding and risky. Successful passing of the tests and training at the Batajnica Airport is not the end of the assessment of the candidates. It will continue throughout their four-year-long course at the Military Academy. (mod.gov.yu)
