Solana hints at "shuttle diplomacy" for Kosovo

“There is need to be patient as I am while solving Kosovo’s status,” Ahtisaari told journalists when asked whether he felt “let down” by the fact it seemed his plan would be implemented only partially.

EU officials who attended the meeting told journalists Solana and Ahtisaari expressed pessimism regarding the latest, fifth UN Kosovo draft resolution’s chances of being adopted by the Security Council, adding they expected Belgrade and Priština to continue talks “based on agreement reached by the Contact Group member states”.

According to the officials, Solana announced the possibility that the Contact Group might organize new talks between the two sides in case the UN fails to adopt a new resolution defining the province’s status.

Solana explained that such talks were possible even if no new resolution was in place, and added the EU would assume the leading role in the shuttle diplomacy.

“We are calling on both sides to negotiate, but not in a process without a time limit. We are talking about 120 days at most, with the status issue unambiguously decided on, we hope, within the UN SC,” Solana was quoted.

Solana also said that the Contact Group-initiated talks would take place “more or less within the framework of the draft resolution, that is, for 120 days.”

The Contact Group is composed of the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Russia.
