CoE calls for start of Šešelj trial

To shore up support needed to table the amendment, the SRS and Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) lawmakers in the PACE received backing from Andrija Mandić of Montenegro’s Serb Popular Party and Dario Rivolata of Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia, since the Democratic Party (DS) and G17 Plus deputies from the Serbian delegation refused to support the motion.

Debate on the report regarding the prosecution of offences falling within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was the first item on the PACE agenda for Thursday.

Tony Lloyd approved of the SRS-sponsored amendment.

Russell Johnston from the UK’s Liberal Democrats was the only PACE lawmaker who officially spoke against the amendment, stressing that Šešelj was charged with “the most horrific war crimes.”

Chief Hague Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte said that it was Šešelj’s own fault that the start of his trial was still pending, since he disrupted the pre-trial proceedings by going on a hunger strike.

Del Ponte said that “efforts were made to speeding up the process”, adding that a lot depended on Šešelj’s defense and whether he would stick to his choice to defend himself.
