Del Ponte to EU: Mladić first

Del Ponte also elaborated on her statement before the UN Security Council on June 18, when she was quoted as calling for a postponement of the Kosovo decision in order to avoid the settlement process for the province from getting in the way of detaining the four remaining Hague fugitives.

Del Ponte said in Brussels today her words were misinterpreted.

“Considering that the council is debating regional problems, Kosovo’s future status in particular, I hope, and I repeat, I hope, that any decision, and the timing of that decision, will not affect current efforts to locate and arrest the fugitives,” she said.

The chief Hague prosecutor also said she believed the new Serbian government “at last” realized the importance of arresting the remaining four Hague fugitives still at large, and added that there “seemed to be the political will to arrest Mladić.”

“This should be done by the end of the year,” Del Ponte said.

Del Ponte repeated she believed Mladić was hiding in Serbia, and added that “no one was certain” about Radovan Karadžić’s whereabouts.

The EU broke off the SAA negotiations with Serbia in May 2006 due to a lack of compliance with the Hague Tribunal. The talks were restarted on June 13, 2007.

The SAA leads to candidate country status, the final step before becoming a full member of the European Union.
