“I find the comments I have heard recently as truly disappointing, for we never used such rhetoric when it comes to Serbia. We respect Serbia’s stance over Kosovo, but we simply do not agree with it,” Polt explained.

Nonetheless, Serbian politicians continue with their reactions regarding U.S. President George Bush’s statements made in Tirana and Sofia over the weekend.

The president of Vojislav Koštunica’s Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) said that no one could have authorized Bush to make a decision about Kosovo’s independence.

“Only citizens of the Republic of Serbia can decide about their territory, as only U.S. citizens have a say regarding their own soil,” the DSS said in a statement.

Slobodan Pavlović, freelance journalist based in Washington, told B92 “it was a serious signal when the U.S. president repeated his warnings concerning the final status of Kosovo twice in only 24 hours.”

“In my opinion, this resulted from a deal Bush might have reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” Pavlović said.

“When Belgrade says that Bush can give away Texas and California, and not do the same with the Serbian territory, the facts are that Bush cannot exactly ‘give’ Texas, California or any other federal unit since the American Constitution does not give him that right,” Pavlović said.

“However, the U.S. as the leading world power, authorized by the international community to seek the best solution possible for the final status of Kosovo, can and should have its answer to the problem,” Pavlović argued.
