Tadić, Koštunica warn against unilateral recognition

He said he believed it would be “very harmful” if any state recognized Kosovo’s statehood without a prior UN Security Council decision.

“Belgrade and Priština might, in an open and constructive dialogue, reach an acceptable solution beneficial to both the Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo,” he said.

According to Tadić, the most influential countries had to keep in mind that the settlement of Kosovo status had to be beneficial for the Serbs, ethnic Albanians and the entire region.

The president firmly rejected any possibility of accepting compensation for the loss of a part of Serbian territory.

"Serbia will never give up Kosovo, nor its European future," Tadić said.

In a separate statement to Beta news agency, Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica said that “the U.S. commanded great power, but the key to solving the issue of Kosovo-Metohija was not in force, rather in respecting the UN Charter and international law.”

Koštunica said that any attempt to unilaterally declare independence through exerting policy of force was “doomed to fail.”

“The situation can hardly be repaired by the offer from top U.S. officials that, should Kosovo-Metohija be granted independence, Serbia will be rewarded with NATO membership,” Koštunica stressed.

According to him, Serbia rejects any move that would unilaterally recognize Kosovo’s independence, as well as any notion that it may “trade with its territory.”

The statements from the two top Serbian state officials came two days after U.S. President George Bush announced his country's backing for Kosovo's independence, during a visit to Albania.
