Report: Vain attempt of return

The protest was organized by the Serb National Council of Kosovo (SNV) that allegedly promised some of the IDPs a safe return, accommodation and a job in northern Kosovo.

However, three families claim they had been deceived. After a futile struggle to obtain what they had been promised, they had to return to Smederevo-based Collective center claiming the SNV officials deceived them into believing their immediate return was possible.

As many as 25 IDPs including 18 children was forced to spend several days in containers in Gračanica, after SNV officials supposedly fell short of keeping the promise of providing permanent housing to the IDPs.

Dragan Krstić, a father of nine, decided then to return to Kosovo for good since he was supposedly promised a house and a job in northern Kosovo.

“We were given such promises during the rally in Jerinje when we gathered to express our revolt and resolve to return to Kosovo,” he said.

However, when he and his family left Smederevo Collective center five days ago heading to Kosovo, they were unpleasantly surprised when they arrived in Kosovska Mitrovica.

“Chief of the Mitrovica region Miomir Kasalović promised me and two more families a house ready to move in. He said that whenever I chose to return to Kosovo he could accommodate me and offer me a job,” Krstić added.

“I took my wife and children and went back to Kosovska Mitrovica. I reported to Kasalović informing him of my arrival. When Kasalović realized I did not come alone, but brought my family with me, he got angry and threw me out of his office,” Krstić claims.

On the other hand, Kasalović told B92 that he had the will to help the internally displaced even if it was not his job.

“We will try to find them accommodation by the end of June,” he said.
