Chiefs of staff from ten Southeast European countries met in Thessalonica to demonstrate dedication to peace, stability and prosperity.

However, Meimarakis pointed out that the region still needed attention.

“Inability to reach a mutually acceptable solution for Kosovo’s status proves that,” he said.

Serbian Army chief of staff Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponoš, also taking part in the conference, advocated improved regional military cooperation, most notably in the training and education sectors.

“A rational joint use of available military capacities to train and educate is a quality mechanism, not only a trust-advancing measure, but also a way to build compatible regional armed forces,” Ponoš said.

He added the current political climate provided opportunities for advanced military cooperation and increased trust and security.

The Thessalonica gathering brought together top army officials from Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Turkey.
