Milošević death anniversary

Since the authorities refused to issue necessary permits for a Belgrade burial with state honors, his family and Socialist Party of Serbia officials decided to bury him in the back yard of his family home in Požarevac.

None of his immediate family attended the funeral, conducted without a religious service, citing “fear for personal safety.”

Milošević’s wife and political partner Mirjana Markovič left the country on February 23, 2003, while his son Marko did the same immediately after Milošević was forced to concede defeat on October 5, 2000. Both now reside in Moscow. Marković is wanted by the police on charges of abuse of office.

Milošević’s political rise started on June 28, 1989, with a speech in historic Gazimestan, Kosovo, during a ceremony marking the 600th anniversary of the Kosovo battle. One million people attended the event.

Milošević was the undisputed leader of his Socialist Party of Serbia, twice Serbia’s president, and later on president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

His ten-year autocratic rule ended in 2000, with the September presidential victory for the opposition parties united in a coalition.

Refusing to concede defeat, the ruling Socialists and their leader caused a post-election crisis, threatening a civil war in Serbia. The crisis ended on October 5, after mass protests were staged throughout the country.

MIlošević was arrested on April 1, 2001, on financial machinations charges. Twelve years after the speech in Gazimestan, on June 28, 2001, he was extradited to The Hague, where he died five years later.
