Croatian media: Rehn offers carrots
Jutarnji List argues that the Kosovo issue is clearly linked to Serbia’s EU integration, despite EU claiming otherwise. Even though Serbian officials insist on not giving Kosovo up in return for European privileges, Brussels wants to reach out to Serbia and help it cope with Kosovo’s imminent statehood. That is why the Union gradually alleviates its pressure on Serbia regarding the full co-operation with The Hague, the Zagreb daily argues.
If Rehn’s estimates were to prove to be correct, Serbia would have advanced to the EU candidate status faster than other states, including Croatia. Zagreb would probably qualify such outcome as the EU policy of double standards, the newspaper adds.
According to the Zagreb daily, the speed of attaining EU candidate status will depend on Serbia’s relations with its neighbors, including Kosovo. Therefore, the article concludes, it will be interesting to observe whether the EU could make positive assessment of Serbia’s co-operation with her neighbors, in case it refused to recognize Kosovo.
