Ceku: Proposal paves way for independence

“Public debate on the document is more than welcome and necessary, since no one knows what’s good for the people of Kosovo better than that people. However, we need to bear in mind the opportunity that this plan gives us,” Ceku wrote.

“The document that he [Ahtisaari] produced looks as if it turns the majority-minority ratios into pure mathematics made of figures and percentages. We who live here know that the minorities will always be free and safe in Kosovo. Our attitude and relationship with the minorities guarantees that,” Ceku wrote.

“Independence stems from our history and from our souls. It is not the international community that is giving us independence, it belongs to us. As much as we have the right to be independent, we need to be aware that we cannot go it alone. More specifically, that it is in our interest not to be alone,” Ceku concluded.

“Serbs to accept responsibility for Yugoslav wars”

In his reaction to the International Court of Justice ruling that Serbia did not commit genocide during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, Agim Ceku said yesterday the wars in former Yugoslavia were "a direct responsibility of the Serb state apparatus".

Ceku also said that Serbian politicians and Serbian society should "reflect and accept the direct responsibility of their state for the genocide in Bosnia."

Ceku, who fought in the Croatian army against Croatian Serbs and headed the KLA during the 1999 war in Kosovo, said the ruling failed to do full justice, but that it "confirmed the responsibility of (Slobodan) Milošević's regime in violating the international public law."

He also called on Serbian leaders to stop "the political evaluations that seek to balance responsibility, because the wars in former Yugoslavia were a direct responsibility of the Serb state apparatus."

"This is the only path to reconciliation among people," Ceku added.
