Mass emigration threatens Poland’s economic growth

The Poles’ economic migration from 2006 to 2025 is set to cause the so-called cumulative drop in the GDP amounting to 45 percent, compared to 2005, the ministry report shows.

The “emigration damage” will in the next two decades stand at EUR 115.7bn, while analysts with the ministry warn that the trend will to a large extent swallow the benefits of the Polish government’s development programs, as well as the momentum gained by the EU entry.

Poland already reports a decrease in the workforce numbers, and a potential slowing in the GDP figure. The most painful consequence for the country will be a lack of educated and qualified workers, the Polish media report, quoting from the statement.

Insufficient number of qualified workers will result in salary increase in some sectors, leading to inflation pressure. Estimates on how many Poles have so far left for Western Europe vary from official 660,000 to unofficial 2 million people, including those working in the black market.
