"What seems to be additionally confusing is the fact that only ten days ago, higher judicial authority had rejected the appeal of the accused filed for the previous custody extension, while in the meantime, there was no change in the circumstances," Matic said in a statement on Thursday, adding:

"Furthermore, I find especially disturbing the fact that some of the witnesses in their statements in front of the trial chamber expressed fear because they received threats, while it is still not determined who threatened them, nor is the hearing of all the witnesses finalized."

While fully respecting the independence of the court, and being completely aware of the rights of the accused to be tried within the reasonable time, he continued, "I express great anxiety with such decision of the trial chamber, along with the fact that the accused for the killing of a journalist are getting privileged treatment in the ongoing procedure."

"I deeply hope that the prosecutor will file an appeal against this decision. The Commission Investigating Murders of journalists will hold a session in order to analyze new circumstances, potential future activities, and we will inform the public about it," Matic concluded.
