More than 10,000 traffic violations have been sanctioned during the holidays, mostly speeding, driving under the influence, and failure to wear a seat belt.

"Of the 500, 100 spent some time in the MUP (Interior Ministry) premises, in order to sober up. We did not measure any extreme (blood alcohol content) values," Radenkovic told the state broadcaster RTS.2016 saw a mild worsening of traffic safety compared to the previous year, he said. 603 people died in traffic accidents, one percent up on 2015.
"There have been about one million (traffic) offenses last year, mostly speeding, failure to wear a seat belt, driving under the influence of alcohol," Radenkovic said.
Over the upcoming weekend, when Serbia celebrates Julian calendar Christmas, the traffic police will step up its activities, including controlling the drivers' speeding, alcohol consumption, usage of seat belts and winter equipment for their vehicles.
