Judge Violeta Usaj-Rugova confirmed the media reports on detention, pointing out that the detained men were suspected of illegal possession of weapons.

Koha Ditore daily also cited prosecutor Valbona Hadzosaj as saying that her investigation was only into illegal possession of weapons.

Pristina-based media reported earlier that the Basic Prosecutor's Office in Pec suspected one of the four arrestees to have fought in Syria and another one of them to have attempted to travel to the Middle East but had been stopped and brought back to Kosovo.

The prosecution also believes that the four ethnic Albanians arrested in front of the monastery on Sunday are responsible for armed attacks in the Serb enclave of Gorazdevac.

Albanian language newspaper Zeri is reporting on Wednesday the Kosovo police found a flag "believed to be that of Islamic State" when they searched the home of Kurti Kushtrim, one of the suspects arrested on Sunday near Visoki Decani.

On Monday, a Kosovo police spokesperson said the group had no intention to attack the monastery and had no links to terrorism.

The monastic brotherhood of Visoki Decani, however, believes that the four suspects - named as Arben Imeri, Alban Kelmendi, Kurti Kushtrim and Rama Kustrim - planned to carry out an armed attack.

An AK-47 rifle with 20 bullets and a 9 millimeter pistol with 16 bullets were found in their vehicle during the arrest carried out by KFOR and the police.

According to reports on Wednesday, the weapons are now being examined to determine if they were used in the armed attacks on the houses of Serb returnees in the village of Berkovo, Klina municipality.
