Four young people, each "about 20 years old," died last night in Belgrade in a traffic accident, medical emergency services have said.

4 dead in traffic accident in Belgrade

The accident happened on the ring road in the Belgrade suburb of Resnik, when a Belgrade license plates Renault Clio passenger car collided head-on with a Turkish truck.

The road was closed for several hours as the police investigated the scene.

The Serbian police said on Monday afternoon that the accident was caused by the truck driver, identified as 56-year-old E.I, who for unspecified reason swerved into the opposite lane and collided with the car.

The RTS public broadcaster is reporting that the truck driver was not injured, while the police said he is being held in custody as a suspect.

According to reports, the victims were on their way home from a wedding reception when the crash took place.
