BELGRADE Organized Crime Prosecutor Miljko Radisavljevic says a probe against Delta Holding owner Miroslav Miskovic is being conducted due to "serious corruption." Miskovic and another nine persons suspected of abuse of office during privatization of road construction companies have been remanded in custody for 30 days. According to him, the case refers to incrimination commonly referred to as "severe corruption," comprising abuses producing illegal material gain of more than RSD 200mn. Explaining how it is possible that someone who took money from his own company be prosecuted, Radisaljevic said that the Serbian public, and quite often the expert public as well, did not differentiate between personal property owned by a person and a company's assets that are owned by individuals and legal entities. "These are different kinds of assets, since, among other things, companies are liable for obligations to employees, state, banks and other creditors. The law on enterprises makes explicit distinction between private property and company property. This is why we cannot talk about taking 'one's own money' here," the prosecutor stressed. He pointed out that his office was also conducting several preliminary investigations into controversial privatizations, which were dealt with by the Anti Corruption Council, but also into those suspected to have led to the destruction of privatized companies. The prosecutor also said that the privatizations which resulted in layoffs, shutdown of activities, huge bad debts and acquiring enormous wealth for their owners, were also suspicious.
