The Serbian police (MUP) confirmed on Wednesday that the man shot and killed in an ambush in New Belgrade last night was a member of the so-called Keka's Group. The victim has been identified as Vujadin Pejanovic, aka Vule Balavi, said the police. Gang member killed in ambush in Belgrade He has been described as "one of the key members of the group". The police said they were continuing to "intensively search" for the perpetrators. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Wednesday the murder was likely "a mafia showdown". Pejanovic was known to police as one of the drug dealers of the gang controlled by Dejan Stojanovic aka Keka. The organized crime group is also sometimes referred as the New Belgrade Clan. In 2006, Pejanovic and a group of other suspects were accused of sending threatening messages to then Interior Minister Dragan Jocic and Police Director Milorad Veljovic, warning that they would be assassinated. The group is also linked to hooligan unrest in Genoa, Italy, in 2010, during a football game between Italy and Serbia, while some reports allege their involvement in "transfers of footballers from Serbia's largest clubs". According to reports, any criminal hoping to join Keka's Group was required to have already "either committed, or at least attempted murder". The group was for several years involved in clashes with a rival New Belgrade gang, which left a number of people dead or injured. The crime group is mentioned in MUP's White Book on Organized Crime, covering the period from the mid-199s until 2001, while its members are described as being known for murders, attempted murders, rapes, robberies and extortions.
