A court in the northern Serbian town of Zrenjanin found a man guilty of murdering his wife, and sentenced him to 35 years in prison. Higher Court in Zrenjanin spokesperson Branislava Golijanin confirmed that the defendant - 50-year-old lawyer Branislav Kenjic - was found guilty and sent to jail. Wife murderer sentenced to 35 years

Prosecutor Branislav Tatić sought the toughest penalty possible under Serbian law - 40 years in prison - but the council of judges, presided over by Zoran Paripović, decided to send Kenjić to jail for 35 years.

Kenjić murdered his 37-year-old wife Jasmina in February 2011, in their family home in Zrenjanin, by stabbing her 49 times. A knife was found stabbed in her heart, while another knife with a broken blade was recovered near the body.

After he committed the murder, Kenjić fled the country, but was arrested three days later in a hotel in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The victim's family said on Thursday that they would appeal the sentence and seek the maximum penalty for the killer.
