The Belgrade Special Court confirmed on Monday the verdict against members of the Zemun criminal group Milos Simovic and Sretko Kalinic. They were found guilty of taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate Serbian PM Zoran Djindjic and sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment each. Zemun gangsters found guilty in retrial Judge Velimir Lazovic said that the verdict the Special Court pronounced on May 23, 2007, and which the Belgrade Appellate Court verified on September 19, 2008, will remain in force in its entirety. In the verdict pronounced on May 23, 2007, the Special Court sentenced Simovic to 30 years of imprisonment and Kalinic to 35 years in jail, but the Appellate Court reduced Kalinic's sentence to 30 years in the ruling issued in December 2008. The two were sentenced in absentia as they were still at large at the time of the trial, but the court granted repetition of proceedings in June 2010, upon their arrest. Kalinic and Simovic have the right to appeal the verdict before the Belgrade Appellate Court within 15 days after the ruling becomes legally binding. During the retrial, Simovic entered a guilty plea and said he regretted his actions. He also on several occasions asserted that he knew "who ordered the assassination", but said he "did not wish to speak about it. Kalinic, on the other hand, rejected the indictment against him. Beside the jail time they are to serve for their role in the 2003 assassination, Kalinic and Simovic were each sentenced in absentia to 40 years in jail for a series of other murders and kidnappings. This separate trial will also be repeated soon. The gangsters were on the run for seven years, until Simovic shot and wounded Kalinic in Croatia last year. Kalinic was later extradited to Serbia, while Simovic was arrested as he attempted to illegally cross the Croatia-Serbia border. Simovic is seen during his arrest (file)
