Kosovo: Robbers target homes of Serb returnees

Nine homes belonging to Serb returnees in teh village of Babljak near the town of Uroševac in Kosovo have been broken into and robbed in the past two days.

Nine homes belonging to Serb returnees in teh village of Babljak near the town of Urosevac in Kosovo have been broken into and robbed in the past two days. The incidents caused worry among the few Serbs who returned to their houses. Most houses rebuilt in the village for the Serbs who were driven out by ethnic Albanians have been broken into once or several times. Some have been completely emptied of furniture and demolished, while only the homes of the returnees who stay in the village full time have been spared. Villager Vojislav Petrovic put the number of robbed homes at 25, and said that "what has been happening to Serbs in Babljak is disgraceful". The owners regularly report the incidents to the Kosovo police (KPS). However, they say that not a single arrest has been made, or case solved thus far. Last week, the OSCE mission in Kosovo condemned the robbing of returnee homes, and demanded that the authorities in Pristina undertake measures in order to put an end to the practice.
