Ex-paramilitary sentenced to 20 years

A former member of a paramilitary unit has been found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of ethnic Albanians in 1999.

A former member of a paramilitary unit has been found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of ethnic Albanians in 1999. Zeljko Djukic was a member of the Scorpions paramilitary unit that in late March 1999 killed 14 ethnic Albanian women and children in Podujevo, during the war in Kosovo. Ex-paramilitary sentenced to 20 years The verdict was delivered today by the War Crimes Department of the Higher Court in Belgrade. The court also extended his custody, that started in October 19, 2007, and the time spent there will be deducted from his sentence. Djukic received the same verdict last year but it was overturned by the Belgrade Court of Appeals which ordered a new trial on June 15. The court has determined that the defendant was a in a group of Scorpions that opened fire on a group of 19 ethnic Albanian women and children, residents of Podujevo, killing 14 persons, including seven children. Five children of the Bogujevci family who escaped with serious injuries testified during the trial. The Serbian police (MUP) headquarters in Podujevo ordered the paramilitaries out of the province immediately after learning about the crime. The retrial of Djukic, which started on July 7, ended today and now he has a right to appeal the verdict within 30 days. The Court of Appeals in June sentenced two other members of the unit Dragan Medic and Dragan Borojevic to 20 years in prison each, and Miodrag Solaja to 15 years for the same crime. In 2005, Sasa Cvjetan, also member of the Scorpions, was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in jail.
