A new trial of a 20-member group accused of participating in riots in which Belgrade's Bajrakli Mosque was set on fire six years ago is starting today. The trial began over a year and a half ago before what was then called the First Municipal Court in Belgrade, but the retrial was ordered due to the appointment of a new presiding judge, which came as a result of the judicial reform in Serbia. But the beginning of the trial was delayed because one of the defense councils had only been recently hired and did not have time to become study the case. This time, however, reports said there would be no new postponements. Two mobs attacked two mosques in Belgrade and Nis, in the aftermath of the ethnic Albanian-organized violence against Serbs in Kosovo in March 2004. In Belgrade, a library with more than 7,000 books of high value was burned down. 20 persons have been accused of participation in the group and are facing from three months to three years in prison if found guilty. Among them is a Partizan FC supporter group leader Milos Radisavljevic aka Kimi, who has been arrested for threatening B92 TV journalist Brankica Stankovic. The first accused for setting the 17th century Belgrade mosque on fire, Stevan Gajic, has in the meantime been sentenced to three months in prison and three years probation. The prosecution recently announced that it would investigate whether the state authorities were responsible for these riots. Then chief of Belgrade police Milan Obradovic was sacked in the aftermath of the inciden, but he accused then Interior Minister Dragan Jocic of giving him “a direct order not to us use force (against protesters). In Nis, the court case closed in 2005, when a person was sentenced to five months in prison, seven people to three months, and two others accused of the violence were acquitted.
