Serbian police (MUP) have a man in custody today, suspected of murdering two women in the town of Cuprija, central Serbia. Police Director Milorad Veljovic confirmed for B92 this Monday that a suspect was arrested, and indentified him as 30-year-old Toplica Markovic. Police arrest suspected double murderer The victims were discovered inside and close to a car near the Velika Morava River on Sunday morning, and have been identified as 26-year-old Ivana Stojkovic and 19-year-old Biljana Obradovic. Veljovic said that the suspect came from the same village as the victims, and that he was acquainted with Stojkovic for a number of years. Police believe that as the victims were on their way home early on Sunday, Markovic stopped their car while they were driving close to his house, and got in the back seat. "He then forced them to drive to Ada, near the Velika Morava. Then, there was an altercation between Markovic and Stojkovic, after which Markovic produced a CZ-M70 pistol and shot Stojkovic twice in the head. Obradovic (the second victim) then attempted to escape from the vehicle, but Markovic shot her in the thigh. After that, he approached her, and shot her again in the temple area (of her head)," said Veljovic. The motive behind the murders and the circumstances of the arrest remain unclear.
