A court in Pristina has commuted the sentences of three members of the so-called Lapska Group of the KLA from a total of 40 to 13 years in prison. In the retrial, the sentences of the three members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) group were cut from 40 to 13 years in prison for war crimes, physical abuse and torture of civilians and prisoners. Sentences of KLA group commuted Rustem Mustafa, Latif Gashi and Nazif Mehmeti received four, six and three years in prison respectively. The Kosovo Supreme Court ordered a retrial in 2005. Friday’s ruling was taken by a three-member trial chamber made up of one Kosovo judge and two from EULEX. The three were convicted of inhumane treatment, physical abuse and torture of prisoners, according to a EULEX statement. Mustafa, who was a KLA commander in the Podujevo region, is now a senior official in the Democratic Party of Kosovo, a Kosovo MP and chairman of the Parliamentary Security Commission. According to the ruling, from October 1998 to April 1999, the three war criminals participated in the abuse of imprisoned Kosovo Albanians in an effort to make them admit to acts of betrayal against the KLA. Mehmeti and Mustafa tortured a Serb civilian as well. The retrial began on July 7. The case, the initial investigation into which was performed in 2001-2002, was conducted under the authority of the EU mission.

Sentences of KLA group commuted

Rustem Mustafa, Latif Gashi and Nazif Mehmeti received four, six and three years in prison respectively.

The Kosovo Supreme Court ordered a retrial in 2005.

Friday’s ruling was taken by a three-member trial chamber made up of one Kosovo judge and two from EULEX.

The three were convicted of inhumane treatment, physical abuse and torture of prisoners, according to a EULEX statement.
