Former mayor's detention extended

The Belgrade District Court has extended the custody of former Zrenjanin Mayor Goran Knezevic for another 30 days. The same decision was made in the case of another suspect in the corruption case – the municipal coordinator for economy and public enterprises, Ivan Devic. The detention for the pair was extended, the court explained, since all the witnesses have not been interviewed yet. On Thursday, Serbia's Supreme Court overruled a District Court decision that extended the suspect's custody and returned the case to the first-degree court. 51-year-old Knezevic, elected on the Democratic Party (DS) ticket, and ten others were arrested last October. The group is suspected of "malversations related to building land and fixing of tenders". The prosecution said that they incurred damages of at least EUR 3.5mn to the city of Zrenjanin.
