The driver of a jeep pursued by police this morning in Pozega, western Serbia, hit and seriously injured MUP traffic policeman Ranko Djeric, 24. The driver of the Toyota was identified as 20-year-old Bogdan Rangelov of Arilje. Rangelov previously, at around 03:30 CET, dangerously overtook a freight vehicle in a curve and ignored police when they tried to stop him. Fleeing vehicle injures policeman Instead of stopping, he turned the jeep around, entered Pozega, hit a parked car and then continued to drive in a bid of escaping the town. Another traffic police patrol that in the meantime joined the pursuit waited for him at the Arilje road toll checkpoint. Officer Djeric, who stood by the metal railing, attempted to signal the jeep to stop, but the driver instead hit him and fled the scene. Rangelov then at 05:20 CET turned himself in to the police, when it was established that his blood alcoloh was at 1.17 permilles. He is now being held in 48-hour police custody. This was not the only incident aimed against policeman in the Uzice Police Directorate (PU) area. Officers who raided a river restaurant in Uzice and a nightclub in nearby Mt. Zlatibor resort, responding to drug trafficking and public disturbance calls, were also attacked, but no one was injured.
