B92 has learned that four new suspects have been arrested in Zrenjanin as part of a case known as the Construction Mafia. The police initially arrested Mayor Goran Kovacevic on Oct. 1, 2008, along with ten others. Kovacevic, a ruling Democratic Party (DS) official, along with ten other local officials in this Vojvodina town, is suspected of abusing office and conspiring to commit criminal acts. The prosecution case against them initially rested on allegations that Kovacevic illegally sold and leased building land, and was involved in wrongdoings over the construction of a local restaurant and contentious contracts with a security firm. Afterwards, the investigation expanded to probe an attempt of the accused to buy the Zrenjanin asphalt base, and the circumstances under which a bus company was awarded a local transportation tender.
