The Hague Tribunal has allowed Radovan Karadzic to give an interview to a Dutch weekly, thus lifting a ban imposed by the court’s Secretariat. Judge O-Gon Kwan said that weekly Revu’s journalist Zvezdana Vukojevic would be allowed to speak with Karadzic, but could not visit him in prison. Hague OKs Karadzic interview The interview will be carried out either through either written questions or over the phone, not through direct contact. The entire conversation will also be monitored by Tribunal officials, the Court vice-president said. The decision upholds Karadzic’s appeal in November to the Secretariat’s ban on contact with journalists, which was imposed for fear that it would upset order within the UN prison facility in Scheveninghen, but also because of the danger that Karadzic would use the interview as a political platform. One of the topics proposed by the interviewer was the alleged deal struck between Karadzic and U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, which the Secretariat deemed was a political issue. Tribunal spokeswoman Nerma Jelacic told B92 that the decision was only related to the specific request of the weekly in question, and that the Secretariat would be looking into the way Kwan implemented the decision. This is the first decision of its kind by the Tribunal, as the Secretariat had thus far rejected all other applications from journalists seeking to interview defendants.
