Retired JNA General Veljko Kadijevic was granted Russian citizenship in August, daily Vecernje Novosti writes. The Russian Federal Migration Service accepted his application for obtaining Russian citizenship when President Dmitri Medvedev signed a decree granting citizenship to 14 people, including Kadijevic, who confirmed this information to Moscow weekly Bolshoy Gorod. Ex-JNA general gets Russian passport Vecernje Novosti writes that the Russian Constitution does not allow its citizens to be extradited to other countries, so that Croatia’s warrant against him “has absolutely no meaning whatsoever” now that he is a Russian citizen. Kadijevic was granted refugee status in 2005. Russian law states that in order to apply for citizenship and a Russian passport, one has to be resident in the country for three years. Kadijevic was the SFRJ’s last defense minister, from 1988 until 1992. He was head of the army in 1991 during the JNA’s operations in Vukovar and in Dubrovnik, which is why Croatia issued a warrant for his arrest.
