Beta news agency reported, quoting sources close to the local prosecution, that an unspecified number of people were detained and will be charged with participation in a fight that included use of dangerous weapons or objects. Rasim Ljajic's Sandzak Democratic Party (SDP) has indirectly confirmed that the arrests took place, as it lashed out against the move by the police, claiming that those detained were innocent. Ljajic's party is close to deposed reis, Muamer Zukorilic, while local rivals, the List for Sanzak, led by Novi Pazar mayor Sulejman Ugljanin, support the new leader of Serbia's Muslim community, Adem Zilkic. Zilkic's followers were denied access to the mosque, leading to unrest nearly two weeks ago. "Instead of using security tapes to start proceedings against many persons, the Novi Pazar prosecution and police have, in the good old manner dating back to the Slobodan Milosevic era, gone after citizens who have stood up to defend the Islamic Community in Serbia," Ljajic's party said in a statement. Zilkic's faction refers to its organization as Islamic Community of Serbia, and believes that its sole seat should be in Belgrade, while Zukoric's group calls itself Islamic Community in Serbia, and advocates closer ties with Sarajevo. The SDP statement also accused the police of "arresting citizens who have in no way taken part in the riots."
