Croatian Serbs investigated for war crimes

The Serbian War Crimes Prosecution plans to launch an investigation against five former members of the SAO Krajina. The men are suspected of war crimes against war prisoners in Gospic in Croatia, namely inhumane conduct towards a Croat police officer, Mirko Medunic, says daily Danas. Croatian Serbs investigated for war crimes Medunic, who surrendered to members of the Serb Autonomous Province of Krajina (SAO) police, was held captive for five days and during interrogation was beaten and tortured with kitchen knives, batons and a wooden stake. The paper states that the five suspects first beat the victim around the head and body. Then, one of the men cut open Medunic’s uniform with a kitchen knife until he was left completely naked, before proceeding to slice his face open and stab his body with the knife. In 1996, Gospic District Court sentenced the five police officers in absentia to prison terms of six to eight years that have still to be served. According to the Serbian Criminal Code, all the legal conditions for passing rulings for carrying out an investigation have been met, and the War Crimes Prosecution has handed over the evidence from the case to the Croatian State Prosecution on the basis of a cooperation agreement.
