Workers in Slovenian company in western Serbia go on strike

The workers want their wages raised by RSD 5,000 (about EUR 40) per month, but were offered RSD 3,000 for July, considering that they work under difficult circumstances - with no air conditioning, and with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Centigrade indoors in the summer, the daily Vecernje Novosti reported previously.

Improving these working conditions is also one of the demands.

Gorenje has so far reacted only by issuing a press release that said the company was negotiation with the workers, and that none of the managers would make any further statements until these negotiations have been completed.

Local media said that Gorenje Valjevo Director Boris Pavcnik was sacked a month ago, with Drago Kremker appointed in his stead.

This is the first strike at the plant that employs 1,470 workers who earn from 300 to 500 euros per month.

The factory marked a decade of successful operations in December 2016, announcing that it had manufactured five million refrigerators and freezers up to that point.
