Water salute as first AtlasGlobal plane lands in Belgrade

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic was at the airport to welcome the aircraft, which was also greeted with a ceremonial water salute.

Ljajic, who was accompanied by Turkish Ambassador Tanzi Bilgic, stressed that this was "a good indicator of economic relations between the two countries."

"It is a commercial contract between Air Serbia and AtlasGlobal," he said, adding that he hoped "the new line will increase the number of Turkish tourists, which was last year 30 percent higher than in 2015."

Over the past year 136 new Turkish companies have been registered in Serbia, which is more than in the previous five years, the Serbian government quoted Ljajic as saying, and pointing out that since the beginning of the year, 23 new companies from Turkey have been registered in Serbia.

"Trade with Turkey has reached EUR 850 million, reflecting large economic interests, strengthening trade and many opportunities in the future," he said.

Bilgic welcomed the Turkish air carrier and "expressed his hope that this line will help increase the number of tourists."

The diplomat described political relations between his country and Serbia as "very good," while economic ties are, according to him, now "better than before, as Turkish investors want to invest in Serbia."

The airport's executive director, Rasa Ristivojevic, said that 33 carriers currently fly to Belgrade, and that the airport was "trying to increase that number."
