Thousands protest against privatization of Telekom

The protest, held under the slogan "Stop to the sale of Telekom," started at noon with the sounding of the national anthem, while participants carried Serbian flags and those of the company's' two representative trade unions that organized the gathering.

Union representatives left a letter in front of the government building asking for the process to sell Telekom to be halted urgently. They said the letter was left there because the reception office inside the building was empty at the time.

Leaders of the United Union of Telekom Srbija and the Union of Telekom Srbija Slavoljub Kandic and Miroslav Joksimovic said in their speeches that the company should not be sold "as it is doing well and fulfilling all its obligations toward the state and citizens," reminding at the same time Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic that he spoke against the privatization while his party was in opposition.

Speaking earlier, Kandic and Joksimovic told potential buyers that they were "not welcome."

The Privatization Agency on July 3 invited non-binding offers for participation in the sale of Telekom Srbija's capital; the bids should be opened on November 16.
