Tanjug privatization fails, agency to shut down

B92 was told that Director Branka Djukic on Tuesday told employees she was informed at the government that the state news agency would be shut down.

Although Djukic did not wish to speak for B92 on the subject, leader of Tanjug's trade union Mirko Dragisic said it was clear that the agency will not continue to work, and that there will also be no distribution of shares.

"It is not true that Tanjug has been deleted from the APR, because that would mean we could not receive our salaries for November. All 180 employees are still coming to work," Dragisic said.

They expect to receive this month's salary and then mandatory severance pay. As the Belgrade-based daily Blic reported, Tanjug's assets will be transferred to the Property Directorate.

However, the closure of Tanjug may not mean that the state will not have its news agency, considering that a few months ago information surfaced the government planned to establish the Bureau for Communications, that would be built on the foundations of today's Tanjug.

Tanjug was on the list of media to be privatized, but there were no interested parties during the two rounds.

According to the interpretation that the Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) unofficially received from the government, when the Law on the News Agency Tanjug expired at midnight on October 31, 2015, the national agency ceased to exist, formally and legally.

The agency, founded during the Second World War to disseminate information about the anti-fascist struggle, has for decades been one of the pillars of the information system of the country, and would have celebrated its 72nd birthday on Thursday.
