Consumer watchdog slams Reference Laboratories
The consumer watchdog said it was "strongly protesting" the way in which the institution's work is being presented to the public, and added that the laboratory "does not have any accreditation, and effectively does not exist in the system - a fact easy to verify on the website of the Accreditation Body of Serbia."The NOPS indicates that "the results obtained through non-accredited methods are invalid, are completely useless," and asked "to whom and for what purpose it this masquerade and media promotion intended," adding that the laboratory was "an institution that will for now not do food quality control in Serbia, which was confirmed by the minister herself."
The NOPS recalls that the National Council for Food Safety, envisaged in a law passed in 2009, has never been set up.
The statement added that the council was supposed to include "various experts who would, on the basis of clear and legally defined criteria, deal with risk assessment and decisions impacting the health and safety of the citizens of Serbia."
"Considering that the said council was not established and that the law has not been respected ever since its adoption, we demand that the Ministry of Agriculture provides us with answers to the question - who, and based on what criteria, will decide which food products will be tested, and for what - 'one day' when the laboratory starts working," said the NOPS.
The organization added that "disrespecting the law and promoting a non-accredited laboratory "only validates the chaos that has ruled in this sector for years, and confirms that the health of consumers in Serbia "is decided on by an 'informal group' in the Ministry of Agriculture."
