BELGRADE The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) visit is not aimed at making a new arrangement - "but rather checking Serbia's economic health." This is according to Governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Jorgovanka Tabakovic. Governor: IMF is checking our economic health At a press conference, Tabakovic said that it is not possible to open talks on a precautionary arrangement during this visit, but that it is a basis for further talks on the formal arrangement. The goal of this IMF mission is to analyze precise data as to what Serbia is doing in order to ensure a sustainable deficit and create conditions for a sustainable economic growth, she said. The governor noted that NBS heads talked with IMF officials, but will give media statements after their visit. “The precautionary arrangement will not mean any new loans, but rather an advisory and oversight role of the IMF,” Tabakovic said, adding that Serbia needs that arrangement, as that would mean that “we have a favorable investment climate and stable economic policy.” The official talks between the IMF and the Serbian authorities on current economic trends began on May 8, and will last until May 21.
