Minister: Elections are more than highly unlikely

BELGRADE Economy and Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic has said that chances of calling early elections this year were "less than one in a thousand". The URS party leader added that "everyone should focus on recovering the economy and improving the standard of the citizens instead". Dinkic believes that calling elections in 2013 would “certainly be counterproductive for the economy,” as the previous election year was the worst possible economic year with both budget and foreign trade deficits. In the previous election year, he points out, Serbia had double digit inflation and was faced with “a situation that we almost could get into debt crisis and go bankrupt.” “I think we now need to focus on recovering the economy and improving the standard of living, as there is plenty of time for new elections,” said Dinkic. Dinkic expressed the expectation that Serbia's talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would resume in February and March would. “The IMF is welcome in Serbia - I expect that we will meet with them in the first months of this year, probably as early as in February and March,” he said.
