"Your investments are safe," president tells Italians

Serbia supports investments from Italy and guarantees their safety, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić, who is on his first official visit to Rome, has said.

ROME Serbia supports investments from Italy and guarantees their safety, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, who is on his first official visit to Rome, has said. Nikolic also added that thanks to its EU candidate status and excellent relations with the Russian Federation, Serbia's position is unique and represents a good opportunity to invest and increase capital. "Your investments are safe," president tells Italians Nikolic told Italy's RAI broadcaster that the two countries are connected by a traditional friendship, and added that Serbia is grateful to Italian soldiers who have had a decisive role in saving not only Serbian but also European cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija. "Serbia is fully opened for investments made in a way business entities from Italy make them. We have well-trained and educated people, good laws and we are open for investments," he said. Stating that Serbia has invested a lot in the Fiat project, Nikolic added that during his visit to Rome it was agreed how Serbia will meet its obligations towards Fiat in the last quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013 and when the roads necessary for Fiat to carry the produced cars and components normally will be finished. The president expects that Italy will take part in big projects Serbia wants to realize by opening the market of the Russian Federation for everyone who wants to produce goods in Serbia, and that it will help Serbia's agricultural development, especially in fruit production. "The level of trade between Serbia and Italy is at the level of the trade between Serbia and Russia. Italy is our major partner," Nikolic pointed out. He also said that while in Rome, he had pointed out that Serbia will start the works on the South Stream pipeline in December, in which it participates with half of the total, and added that Italy is very interested in gas which can come there via Serbia. "The South Stream will be the pipeline that will connect Serbia and Italy, and Europe and the Russian Federation. I see Serbia as a country which, with the help of the South Stream, represents a bridge between the EU and Russia," Nikolic stressed. As an EU candidate, Serbia can trade freely with the EU, but also with Russia, Africa and China. Serbia has good relations with both the EU and the Russian Federation and its position is unique in that respect. Therefore, it represents a chance to invest and increase capital, Nikolic concluded.
