Talks with Air Asia on sale of Jat Airways begin

BELGRADE Serbian Transport Minister Milutin Mrkonjic says the talks with Malaysian Air Asia regarding the sale of the Serbian national airline Jat Airways have begun. He expressed hope that the outcome of the talks would be positive. Talks with Air Asia on sale of Jat Airways begin Air Asia has been declared as one of the world's best low-cost airlines for the fourth time in a row. According to reports by certain media, the airline intends to open a regional centre in Belgrade and set up flights to the most remote destinations such as Japan or Australia via Kuala Lumpur, but the details concerning the arrangement are still unknown. Air Asia flies to over 400 destinations in 25 countries and its flotilla has 101 planes at the moment, while 200 new aircrafts should be delivered in 2016. Jat Airways has a flotilla of 14 aircrafts and Serbia has been planning for a while now to find a strategic partner for its national airline. No bids were put in at the tender for the sale of 51 percent of the airline's capital at the price of EUR 51mn back in 2008. In mid-2011, the Serbian government called a tender for the strategic partner in the foundation of a new airline and Latvia's Baltic Aviation Systems showed interest but it later changed its mind.
