World Bank Country Manager for Serbia Loup Brefort says that Serbia is not threatened by a catastrophic scenario since it is a country with many resources. However, he added that the coming 12 to 18 months will be difficult and in need of reforms. "Serbia not threatened by economic catastrophe" Brefort underlined at a conference dubbed “Serbia's Economic Priorities” organized by the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Belgrade weekly NIN that the citizens' ability to realize the gravity of the situation and the necessity of reforms should not be underestimated. He said that one of the first moves of the future government should be promotion of business environment and facilitation of doing business, as these are the preconditions necessary for an increase in investments, employment and, in the manner, the economic growth. Brefor underlined that Serbia has to continue the reform of the public sector as the expenses for local, state and public companies are still quite high, and much higher than in other countries in transition. He pointed to the problem of management of public companies which, according to him, should belong to the citizens rather than parties, and problem of social policy which should be conducted through maintenance of low prices of certain products, such as gas or electricity.
